What is 5S:
5S is a visual workplace organization method for improving efficiency and effectiveness by identifying and storing the items used, maintaining the area and items, and sustaining the new order.
5S comes from Japanese words which have been translated as follows:
SEIRI as Sort, and tidy the place
SEITON as Set in order
SEISO as Shine, making the place clean
SEIKETSU as Standardizing the good practices
SHITSUKE as Sustain good practices and create habits and discipline in keeping the order
5S Benefits:
5S will provide the basis for the following:
It makes the problems & wastes stand out (for example a leakage on a clean surface…)
It help spotting Abnormalities – like
It clears space by removing unnecessary items and trash
It improves staff productivity as the process is clearer and they do not have to look for tools
It improves quality & safety, as hazards stand out as do non conformities
And finally it lays down the foundation for future improvements
